As a husband and wife make plans for an Italian vacation with friends-to visit her family's Tuscan village-she makes an unexpected, last-minute addition to the itinerary: she plans to leave him upon their return to the States. And her bombshell includes a strange caveat. He isn't allowed to breathe a word of it to their traveling companions. So begins Things That Crash, Things That Fly, the groundbreaking new memoir from award-winning writer Scott Gould.

Called an “extraordinary work” by author David Shields and “a delight to read” by the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Things That Crash, Things That Fly is the new memoir by Scott Gould. Gould is also the author of the story collection, Strangers to Temptation, and the novel, Whereabouts. A new collection of stories, Idiot Men, is forthcoming from Springer Mountain Press in late summer, 2021; and a new novel, The Hammerhead Chronicles, is set for publication in February 2022 by the University of North Georgia Press. Gould lives in Sans Souci, South Carolina, and teaches at the S.C. Governor’s School for the Arts & Humanities.

Sonja Livingston is the author of four books of literary nonfiction, including the memoir, Ghostbread, which won an AWP Book Prize for Nonfiction and has been widely adopted for classroom use. Her latest, The Virgin of Prince Street, uses an unexpected return to her childhood church as an occasion to explore larger changes in the nature of ritual, religion, and devotion. Her writing has been honored with a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, an Iowa Review Award, a VanderMey Nonfiction Prize, an Arts & Letters Essay Prize, as well as grants from Vermont Studio Center and The Deming Fund for Women. Her award-winning essays appear widely in anthologies and outlets such as Salon, The Kenyon Review, and Creative Nonfiction.
Sonja is an associate professor in the MFA Program at Virginia Commonwealth University and teaches in the Postgraduate Program at Vermont College of Fine Arts.
