Blind Man's Bluff is a humorous and often heartbreaking tale of how Hill lost his sight—and how he hid it from the world. Describing a younger self who organized his life around passing for sighted, Hill brings readers through the fifteen years that left him, faced with a stalled career and crumbling marriage at age thirty, wondering if hiding his disability was the problem rather than the solution. Hill narrates these years with his distinctive wit, anecdotal voice, and pop-cultural savvy, carrying readers with him through his exploration—and explosion—of his sense of self.

James Tate Hill is the author of Academy Gothic, winner of the Nilsen Prize for a First  Novel. His fiction and essays have appeared in Literary Hub, Prairie Schooner, Hobart,  Story Quarterly, and Waxwing, among others. An editor for Monkeybicycle and contributing editor at Literary Hub, where he writes a monthly audiobooks column, he lives in North Carolina with his wife.

Melissa Faliveno is the author of the essay collection TOMBOYLAND, named by NPR, New York Public Library, Oprah Magazine, and Electric Literature as a Best Book of 2020. Her essays and interviews have appeared in Esquire, Paris Review, Bitch, Ms. Magazine, Lit Hub, Brooklyn Rail, and Prairie Schooner, among others, and received a notable selection in Best American Essays. The former senior editor of Poets & Writers Magazine, she was the 2020-21 Kenan Visiting Writer at the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill and is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at Kenyon College.
