Durham author Danny Johnson’s debut novel, The Last Road Home, sheds light on 1950s and 60s North Carolina at a time marked by racial and class conflict. The novel opens when protagonist Raeford “Junebug” Hurley befriends Fancy and Lightning Stroud, the children of a family of black sharecroppers, in an area of the state run by the Klan. Tommy Hays praises the narrative, which follows their developing relationship across the years, as “a flesh and blood story about two people who risk just about everything time and time again for nothing more and nothing less than to love each other.” Join us for an evening with this Pushcart Prize nominee.
