Children's Book Week!

2017 marks the 98th anniversary of this weeklong celebration of books for young people and the joy of reading. Established in 1919, Children’s Book Week is the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country. Every year, events are held nationwide at schools, libraries, bookstores, homes — wherever young readers and books connect! Check out our awesome events for teens and tweens this week!

On Friday we will have our first ever Children’s Literature Trivia Night!  Do you know In what year was Charlotte’s Web published? Who wrote Where the WIld Things Are? Where did Hermione Grainger get her Time Turner? If you can answer these questions, you may have what it takes to win our Children’s Book Week Kid Lit Trivia Contest! Readers both young and young-at-heart are invited to eat cupcakes, compete for bookish prizes, battle for bragging rights and the coveted Children’s Book Week Trivia Trophy.

On Saturday at 11am we have local author and Malaprop’s children’s book buyer, Amy Cherrix, as she launches her latest book on hurricanes: EYE OF THE STORM: NASA, DRONES & THE RACE TO CRACK THE HURRICANE CODE In the United States alone, ten million Americans live in hurricane danger zones. But how do hurricanes work? A daring group of NASA scientists are using a high-tech drone and a former Top Gun pilot to find out! This latest title in a long-running series looks at cutting-edge meteorological research with implications for the billions of people around the world who live in the paths of tropical cyclones.

Finally, on Saturday afternoon from 1-4pm we will be celebrating with a Middle grade and Young Adult Fan Party! Spend an afternoon with a panel of your favorite local middle grade and young adult authors to kick off Malaprop’s new free book program for teens and tweens. First Reads gives a free book to young readers in exchange for a short 100-word review. Mix and mingle with your favorite local authors and hear why reviews matter so much in children’s and young adult publishing. Come for the fun, stay for the cupcakes and door prizes!
