I'd never heard of the Osage murders before I picked up this book. And I didn't particularly care about the history of the formation of the FBI. But I loved another of Grann's books, The Lost City of Z, so much, that I craved another. He takes a convoluted and revolting piece of history and presents it in an accessible way, which is something I need when it comes to anything related to events that took place almost 100 years ago.

I’ve read a lot of Bukowski in my time so I knew there was a vulnerable side to the gruff (some would say misogynistic) old drunk. I was surprised, however, that I’d never noticed his frequent musings on cats and his love for them.

If you’re like me and drawn to tales of those living on the fringe, then these two quick reads, Groff's about an idealistic commune in NY and Henderson's about a social worker’s pursuit of an anti-government recluse, will not disappoint.

I have an aversion to dying. I imagine most folks do. But Jim Crace’s vivid description of the decomposition of the bodies of Joseph and Celice, a couple murdered on a beach, was so beautifully written I forgot that death was the underscore.

Speaking of dead people on a beach, The Meursault Investigation takes Camus' classic, The Stranger, and tells the story from the point of view of the Arab's brother. Kamel Daoud gives the Arab a name, Musa, thus giving him a humanity denied in Camus' telling.

Kelsey and I lived under the same roof at one time and what I learned about her from that time was 1) she likes being in the buff, and, 2) she is an amazing artist. Take her talent and pair it with Anna’s hilarious haiku and this little book is a winner.

A co-worker said the other day that as he’s gotten older, he doesn’t have as much patience for epic length books. I thought it was just me. I didn’t read many of the classics when I was younger, and I'm not too troubled by that, but I do want to finish The Brothers Karamazov, which I started A YEAR AGO. Passages like this one keep me coming back:

"Besides the long fleshy bags under his little, always insolent, suspicious, and ironical eyes; besides the multitude of deep wrinkles in his little fat face, the Adam’s apple hung below his sharp chin like a great, fleshy goitre, which gave him a peculiar, repulsive, sensual appearance; add to that a long rapacious mouth with full lips, between which could be seen little stumps of black decayed teeth."

Jon Krakauer received flak for this book, some saying it was one sided, others complaining that plenty of women have written on this subject but no one took notice until a man did. Meh. I'm glad he wrote it and I'm glad I read it.
