In Trampoline, Gipe tells the story of the oftentimes brutal life of Kentucky teenager Dawn Gipe. One of his gifts is the ability to pepper the brutality with moments of magical joy and delight. He can take you from point A to point Q in a matter of seconds and you have no idea how you got there but you sure are glad you did. I tore through this book!

Gritty girl gunslinger goes galloping across the great Rockies on a grim journey to find her brother.
Don't worry, John Larison writes a lot better than I do, and his lyricism starts with the first lines:

"I heard it said God moves on the water. Well, I have looked for him there.
My thirst grows with his flood."

I loved this book.

Fair Warning: Some of the more gruesome scenes are not for the faint of heart.

I'd never heard of the Osage murders before I picked up this book. And I didn't particularly care about the history of the formation of the FBI. But I loved another of Grann's books, The Lost City of Z, so much, that I craved another. He takes a convoluted and revolting piece of history and presents it in an accessible way, which is something I need when it comes to anything related to events that took place almost 100 years ago.

Dr. Willie Parker is passionate about providing abortions to poor women, risking his life on a daily basis to do so. As a man raised in southern black churches, he didn't always see  "unapologetic Christian abortion provider" as his calling. This memoir describes how he got to that point and succinctly expresses the moral underpinnings of his decision. He is my hero.

A few years ago, I swore off memoirs, especially ones about recovery. What more could we possibly say about bottoming out and waking up next to strangers and the insatiable craving for more more more? Jamison's sharp writing and discussion of the drunk and tortured artist, however, carried the more obvious recovery tropes, making her memoir a refreshing one.

I’ve read a lot of Bukowski in my time so I knew there was a vulnerable side to the gruff (some would say misogynistic) old drunk. I was surprised, however, that I’d never noticed his frequent musings on cats and his love for them.

I have an aversion to dying. I imagine most folks do. But Jim Crace’s vivid description of the decomposition of the bodies of Joseph and Celice, a couple murdered on a beach, was so beautifully written I forgot that death was the underscore.

Kelsey and I lived under the same roof at one time and what I learned about her from that time was 1) she likes being in the buff, and, 2) she is an amazing artist. Take her talent and pair it with Anna’s hilarious haiku and this little book is a winner.

Jon Krakauer received flak for this book, some saying it was one sided, others complaining that plenty of women have written on this subject but no one took notice until a man did. Meh. I'm glad he wrote it and I'm glad I read it.
