Kate Atkinson’s P.I. Jackson Brodie mysteries are not your typical mystery crime fare. Atkinson is just as interested in the life questions that the wrongdoings explore as she is in “whodunit.” She has outdone herself with Big Sky. Once again, as she did in her four previous Brodie novels, Atkinson weaves compelling storylines and characters into an intricate puzzle whose resolution both satisfies and surprises. The book repeatedly thwarted my pledge to put the book down after reading “just one more chapter.” (Note: Each novel in the series stands alone, so they can be read in any order.)

Brodie is living in a quiet seaside village in North Yorkshire. He has followed his former partner, Julia, an actress filming a popular crime series on location, in order to be near their 13-year-old son, Nathan. Brodie’s working on a standard-issue errant husband case, collecting evidence for the man's wife, when an unexpected run-in with a man about to jump off a cliff pulls him off course. The central plot, involving the sex trafficking of young girls, is one that weighs heavily on our tough, yet sensitive, hero. His role is not to save the day since the novel is populated with strong, shrewd women who can take care of themselves. Instead, he reminds us that the relationship between justice and the law can be tenuous at best, and that doing the right thing involves personal compromise.

Atkinson’s smart, sly wit is regularly on display, as is her gift for creating characters whom we care about and want to meet again. Big Sky is a propulsive read from start to finish, and surprisingly life-affirming, given the high number of deaths involved. It's Atkinson's strongest Brodie outing, and a delight.
