Baking Yesteryear has a simple premise. It’s a collection of recipes arranged by decade from the 1900s to the 1980s. These are recipes collected from vintage cookbooks, often the type of community-sourced recipe book produced by PTAs and women's leagues.

These are the recipes that home cooks would rely on to sweeten their families' lives. There are some ingenious, inventive, and downright perplexing creations here. All lovingly taste-tested by B. Dylan Hollis to find a place here (should you wish to watch those taste-tests, you can enjoy Hollis's sometimes painfully honest reactions on TikTok or Instagram. He's funny!)

This cookbook is an enjoyable browsing experience. The photography is beautiful, the instructions are clearly written, and the selection is wide-ranging. I’d suggest it for new bakers because Hollis explains techniques clearly and thoroughly. I’d also suggest it for seasoned bakers who want something a bit different from the usual, or maybe something era-appropriate for a themed party.

I am considering baking my way through the majority of the recipes. I want to make “Queen of Puddings” because it’s a dessert I know my grandmother was fond of; I want to make “Cold Oven Cake” because it breaks the pre-heat oven rule; I want to make “Millionaire's Shortbread” because I remember that I loved it as a small child, and I bet my kid will too. I don’t, however, plan on making “Pork Cake” because it just sounds very, very wrong.

That reminds me, I do have one word of warning - The final chapter is titled “Worst of the Worst," and Hollis is not joking about that. Shudder.
