All About Our Consignment Process

Hello and thank you for reading the following information about Malaprop's consignment program! We are delighted to be able to offer this program to our local, independently published writers. Please read on to learn more about our standards, and our aspirations in growing Asheville's literary community.

Malaprop's believes that our role as booksellers is more than transactional. The books we stock on our shelves reflect our values as a business as well as our commitment to our community, and we are not looking to merely fill our shelves, we are looking to curate a collection of books and products that serve as a resource to meet the intellectual, spiritual, and entertainment needs of the community we serve. We believe strongly in creating community with each and every person who comes into the store. In light of this commitment, we hold all of our authors to very high standards of quality, as well as community participation. Ultimately, we aim to create a collaborative relationship with you for the best possible outcome.

As you know, technology has made publishing a book easier than ever. As wonderful as this is for folks who want to bind their family cookbook, or make a picture book with their child, there are also a number of drawbacks. The number of books we are asked to review continues to rise dramatically and no bookstore can carry every title, whether from a publisher’s catalogue or self-published by a local author. Malaprop's evaluates each book and takes into account whether the book will sell to our customers, whose tastes we know from many years of experience.

Malaprop’s goal is to curate the best possible selection for our customers and product quality is a major consideration. Before submitting your book or product, consider the following questions. There is no need to answer them, but these are questions we will ask ourselves while reviewing your book/product. We review each item on an individual basis and we give the following characteristics great weight in our decision making. Also note that Malaprop's only consigns books by authors who live in the immediate Asheville area.

  • Is the product professionally crafted?

  • Was it professionally designed/illustrated?

  • Does the text have typographical or copy-editing errors?

  • Are the title and author name on the spine?

  • Are there production quality issues?

  • Is the product’s pricing competitive?

  • Does the book fit our store’s philosophy, or our market.

  • Does the product have viable marketing support? (author website, active on social media, etc.)

  • You can learn more about quality standards here.

Due to the high volume of submissions, responses could take as long as 6-8 weeks. We will ask for a review copy of your book if we feel we need to see it. Any and all copies left for review will either be accepted as part of store stock, or donated. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE REVIEW COPIES IN THE STORE UNLESS ASKED. If your book is selected, Malaprop’s requires 40% of the cover price, as well as a handling fee of $25, and asks that you sign our Consignment Policy and fill out our Consignment Intake Sheet, which will be emailed to you by the buyers at the time of your book’s acceptance.

Additional information: We do not pay shipping for consignment titles. Damaged or stolen items are the sole financial responsibility of the consignor. If we stock your book, please have your promotional material direct customers to Malaprop's for purchasing, and have your website direct orders to www.malaprops.com. Encourage friends, family and other contacts to purchase your book at Malaprop's!
