Naked Came the Leaf Peeper: A Serial Collaborative Novel by Brian Lee Knopp et al

Twelve authors based in or near Western North Carolina celebrate Malaprop's 30th Anniversary with their contributions to the serial collaborative novel, Naked Came the Leaf Peeper.  John P. McAfee, Susan Reinhardt, Vicki Lane, Tommy Hays, Wayne Caldwell, Fred Chappell, Alan Gratz, Annette Clapsaddle, Gene Cheek, and Linda Marie Barrett outdid themselves as they built upon a story arc brilliantly imagined in the first chapter by Brian Lee Knopp and brought to a laugh-out-loud finish by Tony Earley.

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay (Paperback)

A masterpiece. Sprawling across Prague, New York, and the frozen plains of the Arctic, Chabon's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel chronicles the lives of two cousins, Sammy Clay and Josef Kavalier. Clay, an awkward misfit, and Kavalier, an artist who had to be smuggled out of Nazi-occupied Prague, find themselves ascending to the top of the comic book industry , battling their own ghosts as their characters battle evil between the covers. A brilliant novel of self, history, and escapism (both literal and metaphorical), Kavalier & Clay has a rich plot with even richer characters. Chabon's world is so vivid and unique it is difficult to tell his fictional events from their accompanying historical counterparts. Plus a special guest appearance from a diving bell-crowned Salvador Dali.

In his debut novel Clark fashions intrigue, a host of vivid and quirky characters, and small-town judicial process into the most enjoyable 'mystery' I've read. Evers Wheeling is a disinterested protagonist oddly alive with a complex and restless passion, and his pot-addled brother and entourage of layabouts are almost Shakespearian in their humorous supporting roles. A quick pace, great characters, and a little moral ambiguity.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (Paperback)

By Jonathan Safran Foer
$14.95
ISBN-13: 9780618711659
Availability: On Our Shelves Now
Published: Mariner Books, 4/2006

Foer is probably the best living writer in terms of manipulating language. He uses a masterful (yet accessible) vocabulary and wordplay to craft the story of 9-year-old Oskar Schell, a precocious inventor who is searching New York City for the lock that matches a mysterious key that belonged to his deceased father. Brilliant, intriguing, and heart-wrenching, this is one of the best books I have read.

Mysteries of Pittsburgh (Paperback)

Published: Harper Perennial, 7/2005

I really tried to think of something interesting and witty to write about this book, but I liked this review more than anything I thought of:"There's a lot of talk about this novel. It's almost as if there's going to be a great big literary bash. The guys who will be on the guest list are a cinch. Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn and Holden Caulfield....And now, from The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, Art Bechstein." Washington Post Book World (It's why they get paid and I don't)
