Under attack from e-books and e-commerce, bookstores fight back by creating their own unique titles. more
World Book Night is a campaign to find light or non-readers in the community and hand them each a book. Sign up by February 1 to be a book giver on World Book Night! All you need to become a giver is a little time, a love of books, and the desire to give something to your community.
Twelve authors based in or near Western North Carolina celebrate Malaprop's 30th Anniversary with their contributions to the serial collaborative novel, Naked Came the Leaf Peeper. John P. McAfee, Susan Reinhardt, Vicki Lane, Tommy Hays, Wayne Caldwell, Fred Chappell, Alan Gratz, Annette Clapsaddle, Gene Cheek, and Linda Marie Barrett outdid themselves as they built upon a story arc brilliantly imagined in the first chapter by Brian Lee Knopp and brought to a laugh-out-loud finish by Tony Earley.
Linda is the General Manager, senior buyer, and newsletter editor at Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe. She has a Masters in Russian Literature and Slavic Linguistics from Cornell University and a lifelong interest in studying foreign languages. One of her fondest memories is of the day she received her first library card from the bookmobile lady. Unsuited to being a bookmobile lady herself because there is no way she could drive such a vehicle safely, Linda still succeeded in surrounding herself with books in her career as a bookseller. She particularly loves fantasy (Neil Gaiman, J.R.R. Tolkien, Ursula LeGuin), historical fiction (Dorothy Dunnett, Diana Gabaldon), and literature from other countries (Mikhail Bulgakov, Nikos Kazantzakis, Isabel Allende). She is also a fantasy writer and hopes one day to sell her own work!
