Title of Event: The Ellisons Present Kephart's Smoky Mountain Magic
Local historian George Ellison and his wife, watercolorist Elizabeth Ellison, will present Horace Kephart’s “lost” novel Smoky Mountain Magic, now in print for the first time 80 years after its completion. Kephart is the author of several classic regional books, including Our Southern Highlanders and Camping and Woodcraft. He, along with friend George Masa, was instrumental in establishing Great Smoky Mountains National Park. George Ellison, who wrote the introduction for the book, is Kephart's leading biographer and Elizabeth Ellison painted the watercolor for the book's cover.
"...that mysterious beckoning hinterland which rose right back of my
chimney and spread upward, outward, almost to three cardinal points of
the compass, mile after mile, hour after hour of lusty climbing—an
Eden still unpeopled and unspoiled."
--Horace Kephart
